How to Install Mate on openSUSE 12.3

As you know, Opensuse 12.3 comes with Gnome, KDE, XFCE and E17, but why not use Mate or Cinnamon if you are a fan of those two.

In this article I will show you how to install the Mate 1.6 Desktop Environment on OpenSUSE 12.3 .

Mate 1.6 should be in the default openSUSE 12.3 repositories, so all you have to do is : sudo zypper in mate-desktop.

However, if it is not, add the mate official repo for 12.3, update the system and next install mate, like this:

$ sudo su
# touch /etc/zypp/repos.d/mate.repo

Paste the following lines in your /etc/zypp/repos.d/mate.repo file:

[X11_MATE]
name=mate-desktop (openSUSE_12.3)
type=rpm-md
baseurl=http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/MATE/openSUSE_12.3/
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/MATE/openSUSE_12.3/repodata/repomd.xml.key
enabled=1

Next, do this:

# zypper refresh
# zypper in mate-desktop

This is it. If you don’t like the command line interface, you can install Mate 1.6 via the GUI. Just download the one-click-installation ymp file from here, double click it and follow the instructions.

    I tried the method you mention, but it is taking 1.5 but not 1.6. Is there any way to get 1.6
