Hello Linux Geeksters. When the Gnome 3 has been released, everybody was looking for alternatives that feel like the good old Gnome 2 desktop environment. The most popular Gnome 2 alternatives are Mate and Cinnamon. They are both forks of Gnome 2, developed independently one from another. Mate is created by the Arch Linux developers, while Cinnamon has been developed by the Linux Mint team.
In this article I will show you how to install both Mate and Cinnamon desktop environments on Fedora 19 and Fedora 18.
Installing Mate or Cinnamon is easy because they are available in the default repositories.
How to install Mate on Fedora 19 and Fedora 18:
$ sudo yum groupinstall "MATE Desktop"
How to install Cinnamon on Fedora 19 and Fedora 18:
$ sudo yum groupinstall "Cinnamon Desktop"
After you have installed Mate, Cinnamon or both, reboot the system and choose the desktop environment you desire from the startup menu.
