Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Pidgin is a popular instant messaging application, having support for the most important IM services, like Skype, Steam Chat, Yahoo Messenger, Facebook Messenger and many others.

Despite the fact that it uses the Ubuntu Messaging Menu, via the Pidgin Indicator it can display the notifications in the system’s systray, like the old Pidgin tray icon did.
In this article I will show you how to install the Pidgin Indicator 0.6.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal and Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin.
Because it is available via PPA, installing Pidgin Indicator 0.6.1 on the latest Ubuntu versions available is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the pidgin-indicator package. Like this:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install pidgin-indicator
After you have successfully installed Pidgin Indicator, open Pidgin and from its menu select Tools > Plugins and tick the Ubuntu Plugin box, in order to enable the plugin.
