How To Install Sigil 0.8.2 on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Sigil is an open-source, multi-platform, lightweight, EPUB reader. Most important features: support for UTF-16, regular expression find and replace support, support for importing EPUB and HTML files, WYSIWYG editing feature in Book View, control over editing EPUB syntax in Code View, table of contents generator, spell checking with either default or user configured dictionaries.

The latest version available is Sigil 0.8.2, which has been released a while ago, coming with the below changes:

  • Validator plugin type which can load validation results into the main window validation panel.
  • Corrections to Sigil Plugin Framework Documentation
  • Additional python plugin interface features: multiple plugin engines now allowed for plugins that, work on both python 2.7 and python 3.4, launcher revision date interface and plugin stdout will now appear immediately in Sigil
  • Multiple plugin launcher bug fixes: make parsing more robust to poorly formed xhtml, modified text iterator to follow spine order, bug fixes for readotherfile, and writeotherfile, bug fixes for guide types and setting the guide

In this article I will show you how to install Sigil 0.8.2 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2 and other Ubuntu 14.10 and Ubuntu 14.04 derivative systems.

For Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17.1, Linux Mint 17, Elementary OS 0.3, Deepin 2014, Peppermint and other Ubuntu 14.04 derivative systems, Sigil 0.8.2 is available via PPA, so installing it is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the sigil package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:i2p.packages/i2p
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install sigil

To install Sigil on Ubuntu 14.10, you have to download the deb package for your system’s architecture and install the package via command-line.

Install Sigil 0.8.2 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.10 systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget http://ppa.launchpad.net/i2p.packages/i2p/ubuntu/pool/main/s/sigil/sigil_0.8.2-1~trusty+1_i386.deb
$ sudo gdebi sigil_0.8.2-1~trusty+1_i386.deb

Install Sigil 0.8.2 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.10 systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget http://ppa.launchpad.net/i2p.packages/i2p/ubuntu/pool/main/s/sigil/sigil_0.8.2-1~trusty+1_amd64.deb
$ sudo gdebi sigil_0.8.2-1~trusty+1_amd64.deb

Optional, to remove sigil from either Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 or a derivative system, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove sigil
