The latest installation instructions for Skype

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Skype 4.3 has been recently released, coming with a new user interface and improvements for the Skype client. Among others, it got support for cloud-based Group Chat, the file transfer support when using multiple devices at once got enhanced, support for PulseAudio 3.0 and PulseAudio 4.0 has been added while the support for Alsa has been dropped and the accessibility for blind and visually impaired users has been improved.

In this article I will show you how to install Skype 4.3 on Fedora 20 and Fedora 19.

While the Skype 4.3 rpm package is released for Fedora 16 32 bit, we have to download the precompiled version of Skype, install all the needed dependencies by hand and create the Skype launcher. Follow the below instructions exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Skype 4.3 on Fedora 20 and Fedora 19:

Install the needed dependencies:

$ sudo yum install alsa-lib.i686 fontconfig.i686 freetype.i686 glib2.i686 libSM.i686 libXScrnSaver.i686 libXi.i686 libXrandr.i686 libXrender.i686 libXv.i686 libstdc++.i686 pulseaudio-libs.i686 qt.i686 qt-x11.i686 zlib.i686 qtwebkit.i686

Create the /opt/skype directory and cd into it, download the the Skype dynamic tar.bz2 archive and extract it, delete the archive after the download has been successfully done:

$ sudo mkdir -p /opt/skype
$ cd /opt/skype
$ sudo wget
$ sudo tar -xjvf skype-
$ sudo rm skype-

Create the Skype Launcher:

$ sudo ln -s /opt/skype/skype.desktop /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop
$ sudo ln -s /opt/skype/icons/SkypeBlue_48x48.png /usr/share/icons/skype.png
$ sudo ln -s /opt/skype/icons/SkypeBlue_48x48.png /usr/share/pixmaps/skype.png
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "#!/bin/sh" >> /usr/bin/skype'
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "export SKYPE_HOME=\"/opt/skype\"" >> /usr/bin/skype'
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "export SKYPE_HOME=\"/opt/skype\"" >> /usr/bin/skype'
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "\$SKYPE_HOME/skype --resources=\$SKYPE_HOME \$*" >> /usr/bin/skype'
$ sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/skype

    Some users may have skype 4.3 running but it could not detect the sound device .
    The reason is simple :
    you need to run skype as a root because usually pulseaudio is installed by root .
    if you want to run skype as a normal user from the desktop
    you have just to change the owner or add permissions :
    example :
    sudo chown -R “yourusername” /var/run/YOURUSERID(usually 1000)/pulse.
