Hello Linux Geeksters. In this article I will show you how to install StepMania on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 15 Olivia, Linux Mint 14 Nadia and Linux Mint 13 Maya.
StepMania is an open-source music/ rhytm video game, working also on Linux. The user has to press certain keys, on the music and the note patterns.
This is how to install StepMania on Ubuntu and Linux Mint.
Add the PlayDeb repository:
$ wget http://archive.getdeb.net/install_deb/playdeb_0.3-1~getdeb1_all.deb
$ sudo dpkg -i playdeb_0.3-1~getdeb1_all.deb
Update the local repositories:
$ sudo apt-get update
Install the game:
$ sudo apt-get install sm-ssc
I completed these steps and it works amazingly, thank you! But where do I put the song files? I’ve installed SM on Windows PCs half a dozen times and it was so simple to add songs to c:/Program Files/Stepmania/Songs, but I’m not very Linux savvy and have no idea where I need to be lol
Got it, nevermind.
Great tutorial! I encountered one big problem after installing, however: no sound. So close, yet so far… any idea what the problem is?
I did this after trying to compile from source, resolving all the dependencies manually until the compiler didn’t like something in the source code, so I’m having a hard time trying to think of possible problems.
It worked really nicely. Thank you! By the way, to get the usb dancepads working on ubuntu, you must plug in the pads and run ‘modprobe joydev’
i run sm on ubuntu 12.04, it start and auto close in 1 second
Why??????
I only can see the progress bar and it close without a press a key
i hate win 7 and i dont wanna install it
these instructions no longer work. most of these sources are now dead.
