How To Install The AMD Catalyst 14.9 On The Most Popular Linux Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, the AMD Catalyst 14.9 drivers for Linux have been recently released, coming with support for Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, among others.

The AMD Catalyst 14.9 Driver for Linux installs comes with support for the Radeon HD 6970M and Radeon HD 5770 products GPUs, as well as the AMD Steppe Eagle SoC.

In this article I will show you how to install the AMD Catalyst 14.9 drivers on the most popular Linux systems: Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2.0, LXLE 14.04, Debian Jessie, Fedora 20, Fedora 19, CentOS 7, CentOS 6, OpenSUSE 13.1, OpenSUSE 12.3, Mageia 4, OpenMandriva Lx 14.04 and others.

Download AMD Catalyst 14.9 Drivers for Linux

$ unzip ~/Downloads/
$ sudo chmod +x amd-driver-installer*.run

Kill the display manager, which can either be: kdm for KDE, gdm for Gnome, lightdm for LXDE and XFCE (i think), mdm (for Linux Mint):

$ sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
$ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
$ sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop
$ sudo /etc/init.d/mdm stop

And finally, run the AMD Catalyst binary file:

$ sudo ./amd-driver-installer*.run

    There is no need to stop the session manager, the installe has a QT frontend, it works fine from the desktop, all its needed is to change its mode to executable and run it has root :]
