Hello Linux Geeksters. In order to help the users install the AMD Catalyst drivers on their system, the FanClub developers have created a tool called Ubuntu AMD Catalyst install. The application detects your system architecture and hardware, downloads the drivers and installs them. The users can choose to download, stable, beta and legacy versions of the AMD / ATI Catalyst drivers. Also, it enables the users to easily enable or disable hardware acceleration and Dynamic Power Management (DPM). The latest version available is Ubuntu AMD Catalyst Install 3.9.
In this article I will show you how to install Ubuntu AMD Catalyst Install 3.9 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 13.1o Saucy Salamander, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal and Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin.
Because it is not available via PPA, we have to install the needed dependencies, download the deb package from the official site and install it via dpkg. Follow the instructions for your system exactly, in order to get a successful installation.
Install the needed dependencies, for both 32 bit and 64 bit systems:
$ sudo apt-get install libc6 libgcc1 libfontconfig1 libfreetype6 libice6 libsm6 libstdc++6 make linux-libc-dev dh-modaliases libelfg0 execstack gksu dpkg dkms debconf debhelper dh-make fakeroot cdbs build-essential
Download the Ubuntu AMD Catalyst Install 3.9 package, for 32 bit systems:
$ wget www.thefanclub.co.za/sites/all/modules/pubdlcnt/pubdlcnt.php?file=http://www.thefanclub.co.za/sites/default/files/public/downloads/ubuntu-amd-catalyst-install_3.9_i386.deb -O ubuntu-amd-catalyst-install_3.9_i386.deb
Download the Ubuntu AMD Catalyst Install 3.9 package, for 32 bit systems:
$ wget www.thefanclub.co.za/sites/all/modules/pubdlcnt/pubdlcnt.php?file=http://www.thefanclub.co.za/sites/default/files/public/downloads/ubuntu-amd-catalyst-install_3.9_amd64.deb -O ubuntu-amd-catalyst-install_3.9_amd64.deb
Install Ubuntu AMD Catalyst Install 3.9 package, for both 32 bit and 64 bit systems:
$ sudo dpkg -i ubuntu-amd-catalyst-install_3.9_*.deb
Next, open the installer from the Unity Dash and run the graphical instructions:
