Hello Linux Geeksters. In this article I will show you how to install Variety 0.4.15 on Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 15 Olivia, Linux Mint 14 Nadia and Linux Mint 13 Maya.

Variety is an app indicator that changes the desktop wallpaper, using automatically downloaded images from: Wallbase, Flickr, Wallpapers.net, Desktoppr, NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day.
It works well on the most popular desktop environments: Unity, Gnome Shell, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, Cinnamon, Mate and Pantheon. The latest Variety version, Variety 0.4.15 has support for Cinnamon 1.8 and Mate 1.6, which are the available on Linux Mint 15 Olivia.
Being an app indicator, it can be easily paused and resumed from the Unity panel. The user can use its mouse wheel to scroll up and down in the picture list, in order to choose the perfect image for its mood.
Among other fixes and new features, Variety 0.4.15 got better support for LightDM. It changes also the LightDM Login screen, if the user enables this setting on Preferences -> Customize -> Login Screen Support.
To install Variety 0.4.15 on Ubuntu 13.10, 13.04, 12.10, 12.04 and Linux Mint 15, 14, 13, do this:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peterlevi/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install variety
