Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Mate is a popular GNOME2 fork, used by default on Linux Mint systems, among others.

The latest version available is Mate 1.8 (the default DE of Linux Mint 17 Mate), which uses Metacity as the default Window Manager, Caja as file manager, which recently got support for side-by-side tiling, and a new “Open parent location” option in the search view context menu, the logout dialog has received a progress bar, the screensaver now shows the date and time, the image viewer can shuffle images in slideshow mode, the sticky note applet has received an undo feature and a new command applet has been introduced.

In this article I will show you how to properly install or remove Mate 1.8, on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.

How to install Mate 1.8 on your Ubuntu 14.04 system:

$ echo "deb trusty main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mate-desktop.list
$ wget -qO - | sudo apt-key add -
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install mate-core mate-desktop-environment mate-notification-daemon

How to properly remove Mate 1.8 from your Ubuntu 14.04:

To remove Mate and all the installed packages, do:

$ sudo add-apt-repository -r “deb trusty main”
$ sudo apt-get remove atril atril-common caja caja-common engrampa engrampa-common eom eom-common gir1.2-mate-panel libatril libcaja-extension1 libmarco-private0 libmate-desktop-2-17 libmate-menu2 libmate-panel-applet4-1 libmatekbd-common libmatekbd4 libmateweather-common libmateweather1 marco marco-common mate-applets mate-applets-common mate-backgrounds mate-calc mate-calc-common mate-control-center mate-core mate-desktop mate-desktop-common mate-desktop-environment mate-dialogs mate-dialogs-common mate-icon-theme mate-media mate-media-common mate-media-gstreamer mate-menus mate-notification-daemon mate-panel mate-panel-common mate-polkit mate-polkit-common mate-power-manager mate-power-manager-common mate-screensaver mate-screensaver-common mate-session-manager mate-settings-daemon mate-settings-daemon-common mate-settings-daemon-gstreamer mate-system-monitor mate-terminal mate-terminal-common mate-themes mate-utils mate-utils-common pluma pluma-common

  1. about removing this the right way there are a couple of issues left out:

    Fix lightdm

    sudo gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

    add this:


    Fix plymouth

    sudo update-alternatives –config default.plymouth

    sudo update-initramfs -u

    Fix autostart (double nm-applet)

    cd /etc/xdg/autostart
    sudo rm *mate*
