Hello Linux Geeksters. In this article I will show you what tweaks you have to make for using Skype from Pidgin, on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 15 Olivia, Linux Mint 14 Nadia and Linux Mint 13 Maya.

If you have to use Skype a lot, but you don’t like the app at all, the alternative is to use it from Pidgin. To do that, you have to install the skype4pidgin plugin.
$ wget -c eion.robbmob.com/skype4pidgin.deb
$ sudo dpkg -i skype4pidgin.deb
$ sudo apt-get install -f
In order to Skype from Pidgin, you need to have both apps opened, because Pidgin uses the Skype API.
After the installation is done (and you have both Skype and Pidgin running), do this
- Select Skype from the Protocol list, in Pidgin
- Allow Pidgin to connect to Skype from the next window displayed (press YES)
- If Pidgin comes up in the Skype Api Config, it means that all went well.
