Install Cinnamon 2.6.x on Linux Mint 17.1 and LMDE Betsy

Cinnamon 2.6.9 has been released for Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela, which is currently a RC release. It brings some fixes and patches crashes, the duplicated battery information in the Cinnamon Settings has been modified,  a typo in the code has been eliminated, the Photoframe desklet can now adjust the size of an image only after it has been fully loaded and the built-in multi-monitor functionality has been enhanced. Also, under the hood changes have been implemented. Read the full changelog below:

  • signalManager.js: fix errors when disconnecting JS objects.
  • fix potential crash.
  • Power Settings: Fixed battery info duplicated on the page every time it is refreshed.
  • Power settings: Fixed typo in the code.
  • Keyboard applet: Show text when layout icon isn’t found.
  • Bumped cjs dependency to 2.6.2.
  • photoframe desklet: Adjust an image’s size only after it’s been fully loaded, and we’ve received notification the size has changed (otherwise width and height are initially 0, and the aspect ratios of pictures aren’t right.
    cinnamon-settings: Set the first child visible each time a stacked settings page is navigated to.
  • fix an issue where panels/desklets can’t get focus when a window is fullscreened on the primary monitor.
  • Place modal dialogs like the About dialog on the monitor that currently has the mouse cursor instead of the monitor with the last focused window.
  • Added missing runtime dependency.

As a reminder, the Linux Mint developers have decided to change the code-base of both Linux Mint, and so, the future Linux Mint systems will be based only on the LTS versions of Ubuntu, Linux Mint 17, Linux Mint 17.1, Linux Mint 17.2 and Linux Mint 17.3 being forks of Ubuntu 14.04, the first Ubuntu 16.04-based Linux Mint system being Linux Mint 18.

This way, the developers have more time to work more at the Linux Mint specific software and their system get more independent.

$ sudo apt-get install cinnamon

To enable the Romeo repository and install Cinnamon 2.6.x on LMDE 2, do:

$ gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.session session-manager-uses-logind true
$ gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.session screensaver-uses-logind false
