How To Install QupZilla 1.8.9 on Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

As you may know, QupZilla is an open-source, lightweight web browser, based QtWebKit and built using KDE’s Qt technology. QupZilla includes all standard functions of a modern browser, including bookmarks, history, tabs. And it’s power can be extended via plugins, like AdBlock, RSS reader, and many others.

The latest version available is QupZilla 1.8.9, which has been recently released, bringing the below changes:

  • new QupZilla logo
  • add button to open spellcheck settings in preferences
  • remove gradient in toolbar of browsing library
  • fix showing authors page in about dialog
  • fix showing current tab in tabbar after restoring session
  • fix searching for invalid one-word url strings from locationbar
  • fix switch to tab from locationbar completer when it is the only tab in window

Installation instructions:

Up to date Qupzilla packages are available via the project’s PPA, so installing browser on Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr and derivative systems such as Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana and Elementary OS 0.3 Freya should not cause too many problems.

All you need to do is add the PPA to your system, update the local repository index and install the qupzilla package:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nowrep/qupzilla
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install qupzilla

Also, if you want to install the under-development version of qupzilla, install the qupzilla-next package:

$ sudo apt-get install qupzilla-next

Optional, to remove either qupzilla or qupzilla-next, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove qupzilla*
