Kodi 15.0 “Isengard” Alpha 1 Has Been Released. Install Kodi 15 Alpha 1 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, XBMC was a famous open source media hub and home theater PC, being translated in more than 30 languages. Also, its features can be highly extended via third party plugins and extensions and has support for PVR (personal video recorder).

Starting with XBMC 14, the open-source software will be renamed to Kodi Entertainment Center, Kodi 14 being the first release.

While the latest stable version available is Kodi 14.1Kodi 15.0 “Isengard” Alpha 1 has been recently released, coming with the below changes:

  • Added adaptive seeking through audio and video playback, also know as “skip steps”
  • Android HEVC H.265 support for some chipsets
  • Improve webserver caching control
  • External subtitles over UPnP
  • Allow scanning of new sources and marking as watched during other library operations such as “update library”
  • Allow different sort orders for different sort methods
  • Start of integration binary add-ons and changing the build system around it
  • Improved CC (Closed Captions) support for Live TV
  • ffmpeg 2.5.4 update
  • Remove remaining SDL code
  • Minimum Android 4.2 Jelly Bean MR1 required
  • Android API 17 as minimum with SDK 14 and NDK 10e
  • Removed the need for root/SU on Android
  • Android PIL packaging fixed
  • Changed code to C++11
  • Variety of memleaks, segfaults, crashes and minors fixed
  • General improvements regarding code stability and performance in all areas
  • General code clean-up in all areas to simplify adding future features

Because it is available via PPA, installing Kodi 15.0 “Isengard” Alpha 1 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivative system is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the xbmc package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/xbmc-nightly
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install kodi

Also, to install the encode addon, do:

$ sudo apt-get install kodi-audioencoder-* kodi-pvr-*

Optional, to remove kodi, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove kodi
