Hello Linux Geeksters. Recently, Linux Mint’s Clement Lefebvre has announced that Linux Mint 17 codename Qiana (pronounced kee-AHN-ah) will be released in May 2014, a few weeks after the official release of Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.
The names of Linux Mint are feminine names, assigned alphabetical. Linux Mint 13 – Maya, Linux Mint 14 – Nadia, Linux Mint 15 – Olivia, Linux Mint 16 – Petra and now, Linux Mint 17 – Qiana.
Linux Mint 17 Qiana (which will be a LTS version) will be based on Ubuntu 14.04 and will be released in all the traditional flavors: Cinnamon, MATE, KDE and XFCE. Most likely, Linux Mint 17 RC will be released soon after the release of Ubuntu 14.04.
Linux Mint is a very popular Ubuntu derivative system, very appreciated by the fans of Debian based systems.
While nothing is decided yet, Clem thinks of adopting only the LTS versions of Ubuntu and build the non-LTS versions of Linux Mint on the latest Ubuntu LTS image, in order to focus more on the development of Cinnamon, Mate and Mint specific tools.
Example: Linux Mint 17 LTS to be based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and all the future versions until Linux Mint 20 to be based on Ubuntu 14.04, while Linux Mint 21 to use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (which is the next LTS release after Ubuntu 14.04) as a base.
