The Red Hat engineers are working hard to add good Wayland support on Fedora 20. If everythings goes according to the plans, the users will be able to choose which display server to use, Wayland or X.Org Server, from the GDM. The default desktop environment for Fedora 20 is Gnome 3.10.
As you already know, the GNOME developers are already improving the Wayland support on GNOME 3.10. Gnome Shell is already built in two separate binaries, one for X11 (libgnome-shell) and one for Wayland (libgnome-shell-wayland).
The most of the Gnome 3.10 applications will have support for Wayland. The big idea is to permanently migrate Fedora to Wayland, but it is not certain when this thing will happen.
We know for now that Fedora 20 Heisenbug will be released on the 26th of November, 2013.
I use to like smaller desktops than gnome and smaller distros than Fedora but by supporting Wayland I wiil look forward to download the 26 of November. There is also an i3 development for Wayland and it could may bee an alternative lightweight desktop.
