Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Mate is a Gnome 2-fork desktop environment, created by the Arch Linux developers, in order to provide an alternative for the users not wanting to upgrade to Gnome 3.

Since there is no official Ubuntu Mate flavor, a third party developer has created such a respin, called Ubuntu Mate Remix, but it’s a little buggy.
Mate 1.6, which is the latest stable available of the desktop environment will be added soon to the default repositories of Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, in order to facilitate the users an easy installation.
When it will be ready, the users will only need to update the local repository index:
$ sudo apt-get update
Install the mate-core package for the base packages only:
$ sudo apt-get install mate-core
Or install the mate-desktop-enviornment, for the full DE:
$ sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment
For instructions on how to install Mate 1.6 on Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 12.04, see this article.
