Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Telegram is a an instant messaging service similar to WhatsApp. While it is already available for Android, the developers have started the work at a special Telegram Client for Ubuntu Touch, which will have a visual design created to match Unity 8.
Also, the users can send Telegram messages from their Linux desktop via Sigram, a Telegram client developed in Qt.
But the Ubuntu users are lucky. A third party developer has created the Unity Webapps Telegram client for Unity 7, compatible with both Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr and Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn. The latest version available is Unity Webapps Telegram 0.0.6, which is still an early release, so don’t expect it to work flawless.
In this article I will show you how to install Unity Webapps Telegram 0.06 no Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr and Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn.
Because it is available via PPA, installing Unity Webapps Telegram 0.06 on Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 14.10 is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the unity-webapps-telegram package. Like this:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costales/unity-webapps-telegram
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-telegram
After the installation has been successfully performed, Telegram can be started from the Unity Dash.
Optional, to remove unity-webapps-telegram, do:
$ sudo apt-get remove unity-webapps-telegram
