The Debian Developers Are Voting The Default Init System Of Debian Jessie

Hello Linux Geeksters. The discussions on whether to replace the SysVinit with systemd or upstart, due to the fact that the two init systems have more features, have started in mid-November 2013. There were opinions supporting either Red Hat’s systemd and Canonical’s Upstart, so the developers did not make their mind yet.

This being said, Bdale Garbee, a Debian technical committee member has proposed a vote, enabling all the developers to choose their preference from systemd, Upstart, OpenRC and SysVinit. More information about this can be found in the mailing lists.

Also worth mentioning, Spotify, a popular internet music service running on Debian servers is in favor of systemd over upstart, due to the fact that Red Hat’s init system has a bigger community and is easier to understand.

But since Debian 8.0 Jessie will be released in 2015, the developers have enough time to make up their mind.
