Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, the final beta version of Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr has been released a while ago, in all the traditional flavors.
This is the latest release until the 17th of April, until the stable version of Ubuntu 14.04 is scheduled.
Ubuntu 14.04 Beta (and all the official flavors) use the latest iteration of Kernel 3.13, in order to provide support for the latest hardware. Kernel 3.14 stable is scheduled for release this week, but most likely it will not be adopted on Ubuntu 14.04.
For now, Ubuntu 14.04 is under the Final Freeze, so the developers will be focusing on bug-fixing, not on adding new features, until the stable version is released.
Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr – Final Beta:
Both the final beta and the stable version of Ubuntu 14.04 will be using a rewritten version of Ubuntu 13.10’s Unity 7, while Unity 8 is available only for Ubuntu Touch, being created to run only on Mir.
But Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr will be coming with a lot if interesting new features, including: a feature for minimizing the windows by single clicking the launcher, locally integrated menus (a feature also present on GNOME 3.12), improved shutdown dialogs, a new feature that allows the users to increase the volume up to 200%, a rewritten Unity 7 with support for window filtering by title, Unity Control Center as a replacement for GNOME Control Center, and of course, a new default wallpaper and 11 other pretty wallpapers submitted and voted by the community. Also, the Login Screen and the Lock Screen have been made to look identical.
Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 Trusty Tahr – Final Beta:
Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 is the first long term supported version of an Ubuntu flavor, so it will be supported for three years. It uses GNOME 3.10, due to the fact that GNOME 3.12 is the latest version of the popular desktop environment.
Among others, Gnome Shell 3.10 has been included by default, a bunch of new GNOME apps (gnome-weather, gnome-maps, gnome-photos, and gnome-music) have been implemented by default and Gnome Classic has been added to the official repositories.
While there are still some issues, they should be fixed until the release of the stable version.
Kubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr – Final Beta:
Unlike Ubuntu GNOME 14.04, the final beta version of Kubuntu 14.04 comes with a lot of new features and fixes. It uses KDE 4.13 Beta 1 as default, but the stable version of the desktop environment will be implemented until the release of Ubuntu 14.04 stable
Among others, Kubuntu 14.04 betacomes with Mozilla 28 as the default browser, Muon 2.2 Alpha 1 replaces the Ubuntu Software Center, the new Driver Manager comes as an alternative for the Additional Drivers app, enabling the users to easily install drivers, including AMD and NVIDIA (which are proprietary). Also, it got minor changes and a few improvements.
Lubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr – Final Beta:
Lubuntu 14.04 does not come with many new changes since the previous release. Among others, Pcmanfm has been updated to version 1.2.0, coming with new features like folder settings, dual-pane view and menu editiong, an updated lxsession-default-apps which brings a new interface and updated icons and themes. Also, it uses Openbox as the default WM, LightDM as the default greeter and Firefox 28 as a replacement for Chromium.
Being the lightest Ubuntu flavors, it can be installed on every PC with 128 MB of RAM and modest hard disk space.
Xubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr – Final Beta:
Among others, the Light Locker comes as a replacement for xscreensaver, the Whiskermenu has implemented as default, Mugshot has been implemented, enabling the users to edit their personal preferences, MenuLibre now replaces Alacarte, as a menu editor, the community voted wallpapers have been added and the users able to edit the desktop theme colors and the artwork via the GTK Theme Config.
There are still some issues, but they should be fixed until the release of the stable version of Ubuntu 14.04.
Ubuntu Kylin 14.04 Trusty Tahr – Final Beta:
As you may know, Ubuntu Kylin is an official flavor of Ubuntu, most suitable for the Chinese users, being supported for 3 years.
Among others, the Customized Chinese Themese features has been implemented, Youker Assistant (a system management and configuration tool) has been adopted, Fcitx Qimpanel has been added and the cloud storage client (Kingsoft Kuaipan) developed by Ubuntu Kylin and Kingsoft Corp has been implemented.
Ubuntu Studio 14.04 Trusty Tahr – Final Beta:
Last but not least, the final beta version of Ubuntu Studio 14.04 has been also released, using XFCE 4.10 as the default desktop environment. Among others, the users can choose which packages to install via the new installer and some new apps for managing the audio workflow have been implemented.
