Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Canonical’s plan is to release Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn with Kernel 3.16 as default.
Recently, the developers have implemented the Kernel 3.16 RC3 as default on the unstable branch of Ubuntu 14.10, scheduled for release on the 23rd of October, 2014.
The kernel is very important for both the developers and the users, because new kernels are compatible with new hardware and provide improved battery life for laptops.
Until it becomes stable, the kernel goes through 6 to 8 RC versions, and Kernel 3.16 RC6 has been released this week, so Canonical has enough time to implement Kernel 3.16 on Ubuntu Utopic.
Also worth mentioning, Ubuntu 14.10 will be an interesting release, being the first Ubuntu system released in two Unity flavors: one using Unity 7 running over X.org and the other one using Unity 8 and Mir. Also, an Ubuntu 14.10 Mate flavor is under works, while Cinnamon will be available via the system’s default repositories.
